What makes it so?
First, the artwork in question.
Usually it's a character who screams Mary Sue, or it's just so laughably awful (design, color scheme, costume, whatever) that people insist upon commenting on it, which leads me to the second point.
Commenters.
Now, in general, most commenters are quite nice. They will always find something good about the piece, regardless of how bad it is. Then there are commenters like myself who are smartasses. We poke light fun at the piece, make a a lame joke or two, and then perhaps provide feedback on how to make it better (or if there are too any things that need fixing, wait for the Critique request, if any). Then there are commenters who are just plain insulting, and say things that really, need to be kept to themselves. I mean this is an argument used a lot, and usually when someone's defending their work, but it's no less viable: There IS a back button. I suggest you use it. Flames do NOT provide any MEANINGFUL feedback, if anything they just show big an asshole you are and how insecure (or how big an ego complex you must have) and how little else you have to do other than think you have the right to tear someone's work to shreds simply because you don't like it. If you're one of these people, I suggest you either ask yourself if you would like this done to your piece, or just learn to ignore bad artwork. Not to say that there aren't some egotist artists out there who deserve it, but even then, they're probably so in denial of their apparent lack of skill (and have enough followers at their beck and call, thus inflating their ego even more), it's not even worth the trouble. But I digress. My point is there are pieces of art out there that make the second and third kind of aforementioned commenters come out in SPADES. Resulting in a lot of "A++ thread, would read again" type material. The last thing to add to this volatile mix of comedic awesome is...
The Egoist Artist, as described in the paragraph above. Now they vary in degrees, but the best ones to read are the ones that lash out at ANY sort of criticism at all, whether it be flamers or smartasses, or people actually trying to give a meaningful critique. They lash out, and as soon as they do their followers come out in droves, jumping to their defense.
And it never ceases to entertain.
Why? Because they are getting their knickers in a knot over a DRAWING (usually anyway). Of all the things to discuss so vehemently, to dedicate such passion to, to argue until he/she has got carpal tunnel in his/her fingers from typing his/her anger, they do it over what is effectively, at it's core...LINES ON PAPER.
Now on certain pieces, I can kind of understand. Like if it's a piece dedicated to a dead relative, or if this was the only way one knew to express his/her feelings etc, and people are being insensitive. That I can understand. It doesn't necessarily justify lashing out at people when one could've just as easily ignored it and moved on with another piece, but I at least understand where one is coming from.
But when it's like a drawing of someone's character, or of another character from a show, a book, or whatever, and people pull their hair out, and curse, and insult each other...oh what a hilarious picture this makes. Surely, everyone seen this scenario play out at least once and thought,
"Wow, really? Over this? Oh wow, this is too funny."
Now, this is merely an observation. Not a rant saying "FUCKING STOP, GAWD."
This is one of the things that makes this website what it is. If anything, this is a call to those who see these things play out and annoy themselves by reading it, all the while loathing a humanity that would produce such obnoxious filth. If you're one of these people, hey. Come on. Lighten up.
Laugh.
It's FUNNY.
